Top of the League or Top of the World?

Wow. What a week! Not only did we play two games in the week bringing back the much anticipated Champions League football but we also WON both of these games.

For those that do not know what the Champions League is, it is basically a competition that showcases the best and ultimate teams in Europe from all of the different leagues. They play together in the group stages where the best two teams will succeed into the next round of 32 and then from there will go to the last 16, quarter finals, semi final to the Final. For us fans, if you happen to be in it, it is the most exciting competition of the year.

So this week we played France’s Paris Saint Germain (PSG). They are France’s best team showcasing world cup winner M’Bappe and Brazilian golden boy Neymar. This was going to be an extremely tough game and it proved to be with action from both sides. Liverpool went up 2-0 but PSG made i 2-2 early in the second half. Even though Liverpool were dominating most of the game they were not finishing their chances until a late substitution in Firmino changed the outcome with him scoring with only a couple of minutes left of game time. (If you remember from last week, he is the guy who had the seriously bad eye injury). Of course this win was massive but it is still early days in the competition so we shouldn’t get too ahead of ourselves.

Then came the weekend match for the Premier League and we absolutely smoked Southampton 3-0 putting us at the top of the league by 2 points. We are the only team to have won 6 out of 6 in our first games. Incredible start. We go again next weekend.

Back In Action!

So the International Break has come to an end and as I am an Englishman I will share that we had a decent run of games. England tied with Spain and then beat Switzerland…Anyway, as we know by now this isn’t about England.

Liverpool had a extra week to prepare for their game against Tottenham Hotspurs. Even though near 15 guys were out on international duty, the rest of the team mentally and physically prepared themselves for Saturday’s game away at Wembley Stadium where the Spurs would host us. Tottenham are one of the best sides in the Premier League so this was not going to be an easy game at all, especially away from home with no crowd advantage.

So Saturday comes along and the team is well rested with no new apparent injuries. The team is looking fit and ready to take the challenge on. At the half Liverpool were already 2-0 up thanks to goals from Roberto Firmino and Gini Wijnaldum. We were looking very comfortable but our famous top 3 attacking line were not seeming to click together to produce goals like they usually do. But, being 2-0 up at half time I am definitely not going to complain.

During the second half we remained pretty comfortable apart from when our striker Firmino had to come off due to a Tottenham player nearly gouging his eye out!!! (This is no exaggeration…see the picture attached). After the game Firmino did post on Instagram that he is fine and it was just a little scare….Phew!

The game ended 2-1 to us with them scoring in the last minute of the game. So, of course, that means 3 points to us and we remain at the top of the Premier League. Could not ask for a better start to the season!

International Break

This week there were no games in the English Premier League as it is International Week where players from all over the world return to play a match with their home nation if they are picked to represent. Liverpool has many players whom represent their nation so a lot of the team had left to do so.

Meanwhile, the other players stayed in Liverpool and trained as usual with the manager trying to stay in the right shape and enjoy a lot of team bonding trying to get up the team’s morale. Having a break may not be the happiest of times for the fans but for some players who are nursing injuries during the season this could actually be very beneficial as they will have more time to try and recover to make it back into the squad. Especially here at Liverpool where competition to earn your place on the field is constantly increasing.

Even though there was no Premier League game this weekend, Liverpool did travel to Scotland to play Celtic in a charity match for cancer. The score ended up a 3-3 tie but a lot of money was raised with fun had by all involved. It was great for the fans to see old legends come out of retirement to play and let the fans really enjoy the moment and of course on a day like this the score didn’t even matter, it was all about the cause.

The international players have played their matches now and will return to practice of Monday to prepare for our next game against Tottenham Hotspurs. Come on Liverpool!

We Are Liverpool.

Being from England I think it is second nature to be a football (soccer) fan. Growing up it is all I played and all I knew. I am actually from London, England but I have family from Liverpool which is where the love for the team came from. I am a die hard Liverpool fan.

As I have previously stated on my ‘Hello World’ post I will each week be talking about the latest news from the club. This week, though, I am going to summarize up to this point in the season. We are only 4 games into the season so do not threat about reading a colossal amount of info.

Anyway, 4 games in and…we are sitting at the top of the premier league!!! It has been an incredible start and the team is looking extremely promising winning 4 out of 4 matches. Coming off of our much better than expected season last year we have produced a lot of momentum and seemed to have strengthened our weaknesses which were our defensive back line and our goalkeeper. We just broke the world record fee for the purchase of Brazilian goalie Allison at 70 Million. This is an extortionate amount of money but unfortunately the way the game is evolving and to be the best you have to pay these prices.

Our manager, the great Jurgen Klopp, has really transformed the team over the last couple of years back to where all the fans expect them to be…At the top contending with the best teams around and it is super exciting to be a fan of Liverpool right now.

Our next opponent is against Tottenham Hotspurs next weekend. This will be a big game as both teams are very good right now. I feel confident though that with our strike force in Mo Salah, Mane and Firmino that other defenses cannot physically stop us so all I have to say is bring it on!!!
